Blackhawk TMS is now in Napa Valley!

TMS Therapy (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)– An FDA Cleared Treatment for Depression – has arrived in the Napa Valley.  Our recent expansion from Danville, CA to Napa is now complete.  Our treatment for Depression and other diagnoses for those wishing to try the non-medication route to wellness is now available.

Blackhawk TMS Napa Valley, is pleased to announce they will be treating patients utilizing the latest in TMS equipment.  TMS is the marriage of Silicon Valley Technology and forward thinking medical scientists.  It utilizes the power of an MRI to induce neurons to fire and release the chemicals that the antidepressants attempt to do, but without the systemic side effects that are all too frequent.

TMS is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode. In Europe TMS is approved for migraine, anxiety, pain syndromes and Parkinson’s Disease.

“This is a game changer in so many ways”, the Clinical Director of Blackhawk TMS noted that TMS also shows promise in dealing with PTSD, Tinnitus, and Postpartum Depression — although insurance is currently covering only depression treatments.  They added that TMS is also showing great results in anxiety, and OCD, in fact currently the FDA is reviewing results of a controlled study for approval of TMS for the treatment of OCD.  There is also great interest in getting TMS approved for the treatment of addiction and pain syndromes.

TMS is a non-invasive, drug free treatment, which has been found to stimulate under performing areas of the brain. TMS does not introduce electricity into the brain and is NOT ECT or Electroconvulsive Therapy.  This is a physician prescribed and supervised therapy.  Our consulting psychiatrist will be Dr. Robert Picker, MD, who recently moved to Napa. Blackhawk TMS is currently contacting other forward thinking psychiatrists in the Napa Valley who may be interested in working collaboratively with Blackhawk TMS.

To determine whether or not TMS is appropriate, Napa Valley TMS conducts a comprehensive assessment of target symptoms and provide a detailed profile on the benefits and risks so that an individual can determine whether or not TMS is an option they wish to pursue. If you wonder why you may not have heard of TMS it goes to the saying that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity and that is precisely how we have been treating depression for far too long.  Our training on depression treatment has been controlled by the pharmaceutical companies who have a vested interest in profits, not getting people well.  If patients went into remission or had no more depression there would be no more antidepressants to sell.  Think about that!  TMS is designed to get people well and keep them well, what a concept!

TMS is the most promising tool for treating depression seen in decades, and is outside of the normal pharmacy only box for which doctors have been treating this illness. This is great news for patients suffering from depression, and for doctors to have another tool for treating the disease that affects upwards of 15 million Americans, and costs our economy upwards of 210 billion annually.  If antidepressants have failed, TMS may be the right answer.  Currently TMS is covered by most major insurance companies as well as Kaiser Permanente with a Kaiser physician referral.
